An object is placed at a distance of 30 cm from a concave lens of a focal length 15 cm. Find the nature and position of the image. Solution. Here, u = -30 cm f = -15 cm v = ? As 1/v - 1/u = 1/f or 1/v = -1/15 -1/30 = -3/30 v = -30/3 = -10.0 cm As v is negative, the image must be virtual and erect. Question. Rohit focussed the image of a candle flame on a white screen using a convex lens. He notes position of candle = 26.0 cm, position of convex lens = 50.0 cm and position of screen = 74.0 cm. What is focal length of convex lens? Where will the image be formed if he shifts the candle towards the lens at a position of 38 cm? Draw a ray diagram to show the formation of image in (b) above. Solution.
